Workshop: "Elements of a New Consensus to Confront Poverty in the Americas"
November 19th , 2003
Untitled Document

U.S.A.

Description:

In spite of the widespread economic reforms introduced in the 1980’s, the results in terms of economic growth, job creation and making inroads in the daunting challenge to overcome on poverty have been meager.

In the aftermath of the unprovoked 9/11 terrorist attacks on the United States, the economic downturn and the diversion of resources to address terrorist threat have caused increasing economic problems in the Americas. In Monterrey, Mexico, heads of state of many governments met to initiate a new approach to increase the flow of resources for development goals.

In repeated summits, the Presidents of the American nations have called for accelerating the pace of development in the Americas. This meeting has been called to reformulate the hemispheric consensus and to institute among the international institutions that serve the countries new and more dynamic means to accelerate development.
