Latin American and Caribbean Social Capital in Action: Young Entrepreneurs and Volunteerism
 March 25 and 26, 2004
  Untitled Document

The mobilization of social capital in Latin America and the Caribbean is critical to development and to the creation of efficient and well-managed social policies that involve civil society participation. The principal dimensions of social capital include socially responsible private enterprise, entrepreneurship, and volunteer service.

In particular, the young people of Latin America and the Caribbean are assuming responsibility for creating their own future through their participation in the development of their communities and countries. Millions of young people are social and business entrepreneurs, volunteers, leaders and agents of change who are forging new partnerships among the public, private, and nongovernmental sectors. They are starting businesses, managing programs, and demanding favorable conditions for serving their countries.

This three-day program of activities will bring together young leaders, government, civil society, and private and academic sector leaders from Latin America and the Caribbean to share experiences on the impact of social capital-specifically the leading role of young entrepreneurs and volunteerism-on the region's socioeconomic development.

The program of activities is comprised of two days of plenary sessions with prominent established authorities and experts and simultaneous workshops where best practices on these matters will be presented. The main objectives are to:

1. Analyze the impact that strengthening ethics and social capital can have on the region's development efforts.
2. Highlight the entrepreneurial spirit of today's youth as reflected by the creation of social businesses and institutions and volunteerism.
3. Present best practices, successful programs, and effective multisector partnerships.
4. Promote the role of governments, the private sector, and educational and nonprofit institutions in the design of policies and programs that stimulate business development and volunteerism.
5. Discuss policies and strategies for the systematic promotion of youth entrepreneurship.
6. Examine outstanding experiences in the promotion of social entrepreneurs and analyze possible empowerment policies.

Additionally, we will be holding a Solidarity and Volunteer Service Day (celebrating World Youth Volunteer Service Day) in Villa El Salvador, Lima, Peru, and an awards ceremony for young entrepreneurs.

The Seminar is organized by the Youth Development and Outreach Program of EXR and the Inter-American Initiative on Social Capital, Ethics and Development of the IDB along with the government of Peru, the National Youth Commission of Peru, Welfare and Development Peru, National Volunteer Center, Mastercard International, and the IDB Representation in Peru, as well as the support of various Peruvian universities and international, regional, and national organizations.
