The
purpose of this seminar is to afford a forum for analysis of the
interconnections between ethics and development, in order to elicit
substantive contributions to the issue and at the same time promote
its active discussion throughout the region.
Latin
America in the year 2000 has seen governments seek to deepen the
democratic system and develop more active relationships with their
citizenry, while civil society has been gaining a stronger voice.
The countries are keenly interested in examining the ethical implications
of the many problems that go hand in hand with economic and social
development efforts.
The
range of topics linking ethics to development is very broad, from
discussing the ultimate aims of development to the social responsibility
of the main social actors.
The
seminar will focus on the following topics in this vast range that
can be of special import to the region: a ) the role of ethical
values in the development process; b) some of the main ethical dilemmas
that are coming up today in economic policy design and implementation;
c) the ethics of solidarity and its implications in terms of operation
of the economy; d) the interconnections between ethics, equity,
and economic development; e) the social responsibility of the various
social players; f) noteworthy experiences of civil society organizations
in addressing ethical challenges.
