Description :
Globalizing forces at work in the world today have come under fire for the socioeconomic disparity and general discontent that they seem to create. The economic dreams of the past have resulted in despair and recession for many. Levels of poverty have risen at an alarming rate while millions of people are making their voices heard. The International Seminar: “The Ethical Challenges of Development” provided a forum to analyze the importance of approaching our daily lives from an ethical standpoint, allowing ourselves to recognize the humanity that seems to be overlooked in our societies as we recall the words of Heriberto Maturana who tells us that “the human being is by nature a loving being.” Another important point analyzed in the International Seminar was the significance of volunteerism, about which we can learn a great deal from the poor, who devote more time to volunteer work than any other socioeconomic group despite their scarce resources. Finally, we may say that the Meeting of Academic Institutions that was held during the seminar paved the way for the continuation of the discussions held during the seminar as it produced new initiatives designed to face the challenges that we face today.
