Activity Highlights in Regional Integration
From July 13th to 17th in Bogota and Quito, with the support from the Inter-American Development Bank, working sessions with representatives of government institutions from Colombia and Ecuador responsible of border management and the private sector were held with the aim of establishing a framework to improve border management.

The X Presidential Summit of the Pacific Alliance (PA) was held on July 1-3 in Paracas, a natural reserve of the Peruvian coast, where the four Presidents of the member countries of the Alliance – Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru – expressed their will to deepen integration among the four countries, whose combined economies represent 38% of the regional GDP.

The academic program placed special emphasis on Global Value Chains. For that, the presentation by Juan Blyde, Leading Economist for the IDB’s Integration and Trade Sector was highlighted in the context of his recent publication Synchronized Factories: Latin America and the Caribbean in the Era of Global Value Chains. In his lecture, Blyde stressed the importance for countries to participate in GVCs and identify opportunities and challenges faced by Colombia in this matter.

The apparel industry is also among the largest employers within Haiti, creating jobs for over 36,000 people. The sector currently employs more than 36,000 workers (75% women), represents 10% of national GDP which produces 90% of exports of country, or 845 million US dollars. More than 75% of workers report being a member of at least one loan circle.
