This list provides recent examples of IDB Group partnerships that illustrate the types of strategic alliances IDB engages to promote social and economic development in Latin America and the Caribbean.

A

Alibaba

Alibaba, the largest B2B platform in the world, is collaborating with the IDB to foster trade between LAC and China by providing free platforms/services and training to small and medium enterprises and export promotion agencies in the region interested in getting access to the world’s fastest growing market. Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID)

AusAID is providing AUD 2 million, in partnership with the Inter-American Development Bank, and Goldman Sachs, to a microfinance project in Peru to provide financial literacy training for 100,000 women. AusAID is providing a further AUD 2 million, in partnership with the Inter-American Development Bank, to support two projects in Colombia to work with poor and disadvantaged communities in post-conflict regions. Fundación AVINA

This joint endeavor has led to the construction of the Latin America Donor Index (www.lacdonors.org). For the first time, information about giving to and within Latin America will be available in one online database. The goal of the Index is to help both non-profits and philanthropic organizations active in the region easily identify potential donors and strategic allies. See website

BBVA Group

Grupo BBVA and the IDB Group maintain a long-term strategic partnership focused on supporting and financing enterprises, especially SMEs, in Latin America. BBVA also cooperates with the IIC in various technical assistance programs (energy efficiency, renewable energies and SMEs access to finance) . The partnership implementation greatly benefits from a continuous exchange of personnel thanks to a Grupo BBVA-sponsored secondment program at the IDB and the IIC. See website

C

China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT)

IDB and CCPIT are working together to foster programs and initiatives to increase cooperation with special emphasis in the areas of trade and investment in Latin American and the Caribbean. IDB and CCPIT co-organized the China-LAC Business Summit with more than 1,000 registered participants at Chengdu, China in October 2010. The event is a yearly gathering for government officials and business executives of Asia and Latin America and the Caribbean. See website

The Coca Cola Company and Coca-Cola Foundation

The IDB, The Coca-Cola Company and the Coca-Cola Foundation have joined in partnership to tackle problems of water and sanitation, socioeconomic development, environment and others, in Latin America and the Caribbean. Most recently Coca Cola and the IDB joined efforts to provide 150 rural public schools in El Salvador, Guatemala and Nicaragua with water supply, sanitation services and hygiene education. In addition, both parties are currently collaborating in fostering the economic inclusion of over 1,500 recycling collectors and their families in five Brazilian communities. Coca-Cola and IDB are also exploring ways to reach out to more recycling collectors across Latin America and the Caribbean as well as using major sport events to empower economically disenfranchised youth. European Investment Bank (EIB)

IDB and EIB renewed their partnership to collaborate by providing co-financing for projects of common interest in Latin America and the Caribbean, particularly in support of projects related to sustainable energy and climate change. See website

The Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation

The IDB and the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation have joined efforts to harness the power of high-growth entrepreneurship and innovation to grow economies and improve human welfare in Latin America and the Caribbean. See website

Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA)

Within the framework of the Football for Hope program, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and FIFA established a collaboration in 2007 to create development opportunities for children and young people living in poverty in Latin America and the Caribbean with the aid of football. See:

 

FIA Foundation

The IDB and the FIA Foundation are joining forces to work together on road safety initiatives in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). One of the first cooperative efforts will be to support the development of a new automobile crash test program, the Latin American New Car Assessment Program (LANCAP) using as a model the successful European New Car Assessment Program (EuroNCAP). This program will address the difference in safety performance of car models sold in Europe compared with those in Latin America and will help encourage significant road safety improvements in the region. Fundación FEMSA and Instituto Tecnológico de Monterrey

The IDB, Fundación FEMSA and Instituto Tecnologico de Monterrey created the Water Center for Latinamerica and the Caribbean which offers training, research and information management resources for the conservation and sustainable use of water, promotes strategic alliances, and provides world-class technical expertise and innovative approaches to the sector’s challenges. Fundacion Microfinanzas BBVA

The IDB and FMBBVA have entered into an agreement to jointly support the sustainable development of the microfinance industry across the Region, with initiatives in various key areas such as risk management, training, regulation and supervision, and governance. The goal is to promote the financial inclusiveness of less privileged people. See website

Fundación Telefónica

The IDB and Telefónica share an interest in identifying innovative solutions that leverage new technologies and new business models to improve people's lives and contribute to the social and economic development of the region. In the context of this common objective, the Fondo Multilateral de Inversiones (FOMIN) and Fundacion Telefónica are working on a joint research study on the opportunities of financial inclusion through mobile technologies. The IDB and Telefónica will also work together on mobile banking pilot projects that will provide a demonstration effect. See:

Global Network for Neglected Tropical Diseases Control and PAHO

In partnership with the Global Network for Neglected Tropical Diseases, a major initiative of the Sabin Vaccine Institute, the Pan American Health Organization, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the IDB is working towards eliminating some and controlling all neglected infectious diseases in Latin America and the Caribbean. Goldman Sachs

The IDB and Goldman Sachs have partnered to support and promote women entrepreneurs in Latin America and the Caribbean through Goldman Sachs’ 10,000 Women Initiative. Through this partnership, the Fondo Multilateral de Inversiones (FOMIN) of the IDB and the 10,000 Women Initiative will explore different ways of promoting and supporting underserved women entrepreneurs through training and capacity building for economic empowerment. The Program, made possible with the generous support of the Australian government, is designed for women in Peru, who will be selected for scholarships and admitted to a certificate program. IMCO/C-ESTRATEGIA

The Mexican Institute for Competitiveness (IMCO) is a private think-tank and great source for competitiveness indexes in Mexico. The IDB and C-ESTRATEGIA, the international branch of IMCO, have been collaborating to develop, adopt and disseminate IMCO’s operating strategy and its recognized methodology for measuring and monitoring competitiveness, with the purpose of developing public policy proposals to improve the competitiveness of the countries in the region and the competitiveness of the region itself. Intel Corporation

IDB and Intel have been collaborating on the topic of ICT and education, particularly under School to Work Transition, IDB and Intel, CRUSA and Costa Rica Multilingüe foundation, are sponsoring the Costa Rican Government’s (CRG) project to improve the Teaching of English as a Foreign Language. In addition Intel is supporting the pilot project to implement ATC21s in Costa Rica, together with Microsoft, Omar Dengo Foundation the Ministry of Education, CRUSA and IDB.

Interchurch Organisation for Development Cooperation (ICCO)

The IDB, through its Fondo Multilateral de Inversiones (FOMIN), is collaborating with ICCO in promoting local economic development in Latin America and the Caribbean. As a result, several technical assistance projects have been undertaken in the areas of access to basic social services and economic development, as well as inclusive business models. See website

International Road Assessment Program (iRAP)

The IDB and iRAP seek to reduce the number of injuries, fatalities, and economic and social losses derived from traffic accidents in Latin America and the Caribbean. Every year approximately 20-50 million people are injured globally and 100,000 people die on the region's roads. In collaboration with the IDB and the Government of Paraguay, iRAP performed a safety assessment of 90 percent of the paved roads in the country and is using the data to develop cost-effective, high-impact measures to address problem areas. In the Mesoamerican region, iRAP experts analyzed data collected along the 3,244-kilometer Pacific Corridor, and provided investment recommendations and a star rating for each country. See website

International Solid Waste Association (ISWA)

The IDB and ISWA’s collaboration focuses on the area of dissemination and knowledge sharing, particularly in the implementation of training courses in LAC housed and financed by the IDB including the participation of ISWA experts; support and collaborate on the organization of joint events in the waste management sector; collaborate on the dissemination of information regarding the Solid Waste Management activities; Support and collaborate on joint technical cooperation with the aim of developing applied research; and collaborate and develop the way in which from the solid waste sector it can contribute to reduction of GHG emissions. International Union for Conservation of Nature

The IDB and ISWA's collaboration focuses on the area of dissemination and knowledge sharing particularly in the implementation of training courses in LAC housed and financed by the IDB including the participation of ISWA experts; support anc collaborate on the organization of joint events in the waste management sector; collaborate on joint technical cooperation with the aim of developing applied research; and collaborate and develop the way in which from the solid waste sector it can contribute to reduction of GHG emissions . Microsoft

Microsoft and the IDB enjoy a well established relationship centered on the promotion of socioeconomic development in the region by enabling people and businesses to realize their full potential through the use of innovative information technology. Microsoft has supported the Youth Fund for Innovation and Social Action, provides grants to increase access to financial services by small businesses and seeks to increase the technological research capacity. Microsoft, Infusion and the IDB jointly developedthe Haiti Integrated Government Platform that equip the Haitian public sector with state-of-the-art tools to generate, store, share and analyze information needed to plan, execute and monitor activities. The platform is also aimed at increasing transparency and efficiency in the use of reconstruction resources after that 2010 earthquake that desolated the country. See:

Mitsubishi Corporation

Together with the Mitsubishi Corporation, the IDB is helping private sector client organizations in Latin America and the Caribbean identify opportunities to improve the design, implementation, and monitoring of Corporate Social Responsibility programs. See website

MTV

This strategic alliance with MTV creates a space where the voices of youths can be heard and where youths can learn how to make a difference while promoting their active engagement and leadership in regional development. See

National Geographic Society

This alliance promotes sustainable tourism in the region by promoting innovative solutions to geo-tourism development barriers, democratizing access to technical support and funding, and favoring practical creativity. This initiative seeks to engage other private and public sector partners to scale-up the financing and implementation of innovative programs that adhere to geo-tourism principles. See website

P

PepsiCo, Inc.

PepsiCo, Inc. and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) joined forces to spur social and economic growth in 26 countries across Latin America and the Caribbean. The partnership’s inaugural project was launched in Mexico with an agriculture initiative that seeks to significantly expand commercial sunflower production. The project is to create a sustainable market for sunflowers – a once-thriving commercial crop which has diminished in recent years – while providing loans and a source of income for some 850 Mexican farmers and their families. For PepsiCo, the sunflowers will provide a source of heart-healthy high-oleic sunflower oil (HOSO ) for cooking potato chips, biscuits, nuts and other snacks PepsiCo produces in Mexico under the Sabritas and Gamesa-Quaker brands. PepsiCo Foundation

The PepsiCo Foundation contributed a $5 million grant to the AquaFund in 2011, a fund launched by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) to facilitate investment in water supply and sanitation, water resources and solid waste management and wastewater treatment. PepsiCo is the first private sector donor to the AquaFund; all previous contributions have been made by sovereign governments. See:

Entertainment Industry Foundation’s Stand Up to Cancer

The IDB is working with Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C) on a pilot project in Veracruz, a Mexican state with high mortality rates for cervical-uterine and breast cancer. The Veracruz project will feature public service announcements promoting healthy behaviors and early detection. Additionally the IDB and SU2C will work with Mexican authorities to ensure that women reached by the campaign have access to pap smears, mammograms and manual exams. See website

Swiss Re

In cooperation with Swiss Re, the IDB has been working on risk management initiatives to help the countries of Latin America to mitigate the economic impacts of natural disasters and climate change. The initiatives cover topics as diverse as financial solutions, project financing and risk awareness. See website

Un Techo Para Mi Pais

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and Un Techo para mi Pais have been working together to expand the reach of basic housing and social inclusion programs to the most impoverished communities in Latin America and the Caribbean through a network of volunteers led by youth. See website

Universal Giving

IDB has partnered with UniversalGiving™—a social entrepreneurship non-profit-- to feature project opportunities in Latin America and the Caribbean on its web-based match making service. UniversalGiving helps people donate and volunteer with quality, vetted philanthropic organizations and projects all over the world. See website
