The Global Initiative
Sustainable Energy for All Americas is a partner in the global United Nations initiative. In the words of United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon, energy is the “golden thread” that ties together the goals of sustainable development in a wide range of areas, from education to the environment to ending poverty and hunger.
The Sustainable Energy for All (SE4All) initiative is a multi-stakeholder partnership between governments, the private sector, and civil society. Launched by the UN Secretary-General in 2011, it sets out to achieve three interlinked objectives by 2030:
1. To ensure universal access to modern energy services.
2. To double the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency.
3. To double the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix.
The IDB is one of three regional Hubs that form part of the global initiative. The IDB supports the initiative in Latin America and the Caribbean while the African Development Bank and Asian Development Bank work with the initiative in other regions.
Sustainable Energy for All Americas
“Democratization of Energy should be the sign of our times,” said Chilean President Michelle Bachelet at the launch of the Decade of Sustainable Energy for All Americas (SE4All Americas) in Santiago, Chile in 2014. To make it the sign of our times, it is important to understand the challenges and opportunities in Latin America and the Caribbean. In order to accomplish this, the IDB, the United Nations, and key partners such as member governments, civil society, academia, and the private sector, have created an online hub to promote the work of Sustainable Energy for All (SE4All) in our region. This online hub will be a catalyst for sustainable energy growth, and will consolidate fragmented energy information, and promote transparency, access to information, and the use of standardized information.
IDB, UNDP, and ECLAC to Coordinate Efforts in Unique Partnership for Sustainable Energy for All in the Americas
Three regional multilateral institutions -- the IDB, ECLAC, and the UNDP -- met in Washington on February 23, 2015 to jointly commit their unique knowledge and resources in support of the UN's Sustainable Energy for All initiative in the Americas.
This partnership is expected to implement strategic objectives on behalf of SE4All Americas, including the creation of knowledge products, help with planning for universal access to energy, coordination with national and international partners, monitoring of the status of SE4All in LAC countries, policy analysis, and improved project preparation and access to finance for projects that support the goals of SE4All. Increased coordination related to sustainable energy will help catalyze major new investment opportunities in order to speed-up the transformation of the world’s energy systems, help eliminate energy poverty, and increase prosperity.
