Renewable Energy

Latin America and the Caribbean lead the world in the exploitation of renewable sources of energy such as hydroelectricity and efficient biofuels. However, the region has only developed around 30 percent of its hydroelectric capacity, and the potential of new sources such as wind, solar and geothermal power has only begun to be harnessed.

The IDB is helping member countries to carefully examine the social, financial and environmental sustainability of renewable energy alternatives and to finance projects that deliver the best development impact. We support research and pilot projects to test the viability of the best renewable energy ideas, as well as government efforts to diversify national energy matrices through large investments in wind, efficient ethanol and hydropower.
