IDEAS 2009

In February 2009, the Inter -American Development Bank, together with the Government of South Korea, GVEP International from England and GTZ of Germany, jointly launched the IDEAS Energy Innovation Contest. IDEAS from its origin has been founded to give priority to the challenges present in Latin America and the Caribbean, pertaining to mitigation and adaptation to climate change , such as the introduction of renewable sources of non-conventional energy in rural areas and optimization of energy efficiency in conventional energy systems.

In its first edition more than 1,100 IDEAS belonging to 28 countries, of which 850 were eligible, 250 IDEAS were declared by a panel of international experts as semi - finalists and 25 IDEAS were the winners of the first competition IDEAS Energy Innovation winners were presented after a rigorous selection process, based on the following criteria : degree of innovation; development impact , scalability , replicability , financial sustainability , institutional capacity , implementation strategy and risks.
