Teaching Natural Science and Mathematics

Studies in the region suggest that more than half of students do not develop the minimum skills needed to function in mathematics .

A solid foundation in mathematics and natural sciences will reduce the disadvantages children in Latin America and the Caribbean still experience in their education when compared to other world regions and will open opportunities in academic life, career, and employment.

The IDB is committed to resolving this situation by supporting the efforts of governments in the region to improve the teaching of math and natural science, and to provide the region’s children and youth with the skills they need to face the challenges of the globalized economy and to function effectively in modern society.

Studies strongly suggest that young people become discouraged and drop out of school at twelve years if they are unable to read and apply mathematics.

Through the implementation of a series of pilot initiatives, the Bank is testing teaching and learning strategies for different developmental stages.
