    Crime and insecurity are increasingly common features of life in Latin America and the Caribbean, particularly in urban areas. Victimization rates in the region are the highest in the world, with the exception of Sub-Saharan Africa. This publication explores how victimization and perceptions of insecurity affect well-being and health in Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as how adaptation mediates those effects.

As a result of these efforts, a body of knowledge and expertise has been gathered which can aid in the design of public policies that promote gender equity and violence prevention. Governments and international organizations have recently started to look for ways to reduce the incidence of this type of violence and it is now apparent that a coordinated effort must be made in order to provide an effective and comprehensive response to families affected by domestic violence.
