According to the United Nations Development Programme's Human Development Report for Central America 2009-2010, the homicide rate in Central America is 33 per 100,000 persons, while the world average is 8 per 100,000 persons. The Central American rate exceeds the average for Latin America and the Caribbean, which stands at 26.3 per 100,000 persons.

According to an estimate by the Global Study on Homicide, UNODC, 2011, the total number of homicides in 2010 was 468,000. Approximately 36 percent (170,000) took place in Africa, 27 percent in Asia (128,000), and just 5 percent in Europe and 1 percent in Oceania.
