The Latin American and Caribbean Research Network

Books

The Research Department (RES) typically produces edited volumes based on research conducted through the Latin American Research Network and books compiled from conference proceedings of RES-sponsored events:

Economics in the Tropics
Robles C., Edgar; Lizano, Eduardo; Arce, Gilberto E.
B-624 - Spanish - Sep, 2007

Economics in the Tropics presents the most fundamental economic principles as Marta--a student who distributes her time between school, leisure and work--becomes interested in topics that arise in the newspapers or in discussions with her parents. Through the book, the concepts are developed intuitively, making this an ideal book for learning about economics in a clear and simple way without the use of sophisticated instruments. Since the book is structured by topics, it is an excellent complement to an economics course for students who have had no prior training in theory. This book develops basic economic principals through the eyes of Marta, a student who divides her time between school, leisure and work. The purpose of this project is to fill the gap in domestically written textbooks in a region where economics is taught largely with foreign texts. The first book in this series was published in Brazil in early 2006.

Macroeconomics and Oil
Rios, Germán; Pineda, José G.; Manzano, Osmel E.; Méndez, Rodolfo J.
B-625 - Spanish - Sep, 2007

This book stems from contemporary macroeconomic principles and theories. These same principles and theories are simply and cleverly applied to the case of Venezuela. This scope implies a recognition of the peculiarities of an economy dependent on oil exports. This book is the product of an innovative project by the Latin American Research Network, titled "Preparación de libros de textos básicos en América Latina y el Caribe".  Its objective is to fill the research gap in a country where the majority of the economics pedagogy is imported. The first book of this series was published in Brazil at the beginning of 2006.

Understanding the Economy in Uruguay
B-620 - Spanish - Dec, 2006

This book, carried out by researchers from CINVE, covers a number of economic topics crucial to the country and is aimed at readers not specialized in economics. With a didactic approach and relatively simple language, the book responds to many questions of concern to the population at large: Is it true that the country`s growth rate is low or does it suffer from wide fluctuations? What is Uruguay`s trade position in international markets? Is public expenditure high in Uruguay? Which factors explain the unemployment? How does Uruguay measure up in terms of poverty and income inequality? This book is the product of an innovative Latin American Research Network project: Preparation of Texts Books in Latin America and The Caribbean. The purpose of this project is to fill the gap in domestically written textbooks in a region where economics is taught largely with foreign texts. The first book in this series was published in Brazil in early 2006.

Macroeconomics in Argentina
Llach, Lucas; Braun, Miguel
B-618 - Spanish - Dec, 2006

This book is the product of an innovative Latin American Research Network project: Preparation of Texts Books in Latin America and The Caribbean. The purpose of this project is to fill the gap in domestically written textbooks in a region where economics is taught largely with foreign texts. The first book in this series was published in Brazil in early 2006. Macroeconomía Argentina is a beginning textbook that introduces basic economic concepts in a way geared specifically for the Argentine context. Issues such as the value of the dollar, country risk and the fiscal situation are given the same weight they are in the national public debate. Case studies and examples are familiar to the Argentine reader and include hyperinflation, convertibility and the 2002 devaluation.
