CEO Summit launches pioneering initiatives for Latin America and the Caribbean
Convening over 700 top executives and 12 heads of state, the 1st CEO Summit of the Americas in Cartagena provided an unprecedented platform to promote public and private sector cooperation in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) and witnessed the announcement of the following initiatives:
One Million Youth to Benefit from US$37+ million partnership
Walmart, Caterpillar, Microsoft, CEMEX, Arcos Dorados/McDonalds, the IDB and the International Youth Foundation launched the New Youth Employment Initiative (NEO) to provide 1 million youth in LAC with training and capacity building. “The announcement we are making today is just the beginning. We invite governments, companies and other organizations to join NEO in making a difference in the lives of hundreds of thousands of young people,” said IDB President Luis A. Moreno. Read more.
Breaking the Cycle of Poverty: IDB-ALAS Awards
On the eve of the Summit, Shakira’s Alas Foundation and the IDB announced joint IDB-Alas awards for innovative and successful contributions to ECD. "The successful response to the ALAS IDB Competition is the expression of a commitment that transcends borders. IDB and MIF team up to expand lending for women entrepreneurs
Up to $55 million in financing for institutions to develop and implement innovative and inclusive lending models. Read More
IDB partner Canada commits CAN$250million to new climate change management Fund
The purpose of the Canadian Climate Fund, which will be managed by the IDB, is to catalyze greater private investment in climate change in LAC. The Fund is expected to leverage up to $US5 billion in climate change investments, contributing to a reduction of up to 50 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions in 25 years. “Canada’s partnership offers us a tremendous opportunity to expand our support for climate-friendly projects in our member countries.” said Hans Schulz, General Manager at the IDB’s Structured and Corporate Finance Department. IDB strengthens relationship with Europe’s Nordic Countries
In a delegation headed by President Luis A. Moreno, the IDB met with key government officials and private sector partners in Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland, to explore new areas and strengthen existing collaboration to jointly tackle some of the most pressing challenges in LAC. More.
Forum on Impact Investing: Developing a coherent industry in LAC
The IDB and the Global Impact Investing Network (GIIN), with corporate sponsor Citi and media sponsor The Financial Times, co-hosted a forum focused on identifying opportunities to achieve positive social and environmental impact through for-profit investment in LAC. More.
South-to-South collaboration: Singapore and Colombia partner for transportation
Through a partnership born between the IDB and the International Enterprise Singapore, Singapore is providing technical assistance and transfer of best practices to the city of Bogota, Colombiain the area of smart congestion management practices and technology for transport infrastructure. More.
$US175 billion committed to sustainable transportation systems at Rio +20
Within the context of the Rio +20, the world’s 8 Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs) pledge to invest US$175 billion to finance more sustainable transportation systems over the next decade, in a significant move towards inclusive green growth and sustainability as a whole. More.

President of Spain and IDB President inaugurate IDB’s Europe office in Madrid
The President of the Government of Spain, Mariano Rajoy, and IDB President Moreno, presided over the opening ceremonyof the IDB’s representation office for Europe in Madrid. President Rajoy stated: “The transfer of the IDB’s European office to Madrid will permit us, without a doubt, to forge an even deeper friendship and strengthen economic ties between the two regions.” More.
