International donor community makes new commitment to help in Peru's fight against drugs

The international donor community expressed strong support for Peru's continuing fight against drugs at a meeting in Paris. The meeting, of the Consultative Group on the Fight Against Drugs in Peru, was the follow-up to the Group's first encounter in Brussels in November, 1998 - which launched the ground-breaking initiative to involve the international community in a shared responsibility with a drug-producing country in the war against drugs. After expressing their satisfaction with the Peruvian government's progress in implementing its anti-drug program over the last year, the donors pledged an additional $56 million to bring their total commitments up to $187 million, and agreed to accelerate disbursement of existing pledges under the auspices of the Consultative Group on the Fight Against Illicit Drugs in Peru.

Consultative group meeting for Peru and Ecuador postponed

Following consultations between the Inter-American Development Bank and the authorities of Peru and Ecuador, the Consultative Group Meeting for Peru and Ecuador in support of the Binational Development Plan, due to have been held under the auspices of the Inter-American Development Bank in Paris on Jan. 24-25, has been postponed. It will now be held in New Orleans in conjunction with the IDB Annual Meeting there at the end of March. The Paris meeting was rescheduled due to the political developments in Ecuador that led to the installation of the new president.
