Guatemala- The final day of the IDB Annual meeting will be marked by the final Plenary sessions, a closing speech by the IDB president, several signing ceremonies for new IDB operations.

The meeting has been highlighted by calls by many participants to expand opportunities for the low-income majority of the population of the region to benefit from economic growth experienced in recent years. The IDB’s “Opportunities for the Majority” initiative, a cornerstone for Bank programs and policies, was hailed by participants as a key contribution to reducing poverty and increasing equity in the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean.

The three seminars held prior to the official meeting also focused on the theme of poverty. Participants advocated inclusion of social groups presently excluded from the economic mainstream and described how the private sector can shoulder a greater role in poverty reduction. Participants in another seminar, sponsored by the German government, called for development of sustainable energy and responses to the threat of climate change.

In his closing statement, President Moreno will review the results of the meeting and refer to statements made by the Bank’s governors during the plenary sessions.

Other events scheduled for today will be the signing for a program to support competitiveness in Guyana, another program to promote competitiveness in Uruguay, and a program to support decentralized rural transport in Peru.

The meeting will close with a cultural event, “Guatemala, Soul of the Earth,” at the city’s National Theater.
