Los
conquistadores
It was no
secret that Parra sympathized with the political left and maintained
close ties with members of Chile's Communist and Socialist parties.
She supported Salvador Allendes attempts to become president
long before he was finally elected. She scorned the rich, referring
to them in the local slang as pitucos, and held the army
and the church responsible for Chiles social and economic
inequality. In this tapestry, Parras conquistadores
are not the Spaniards who came to Chile in the 16th century, but
the military man, the landowner and the priest who punish those
who take, not out of greed, but out of need.
