‘We were living in paradise’

El Salvador’s earthquakes affect both rich and poor

Survivors of the landslide that killed more than 500 people in the Salvadoran suburb of Las Colinas often left small testimonials to mark the death of their loved ones. In this case, a father indicates in this hand-written sign that there stood his house, where he once lived with his wife and three children. Las Colinas was buried by an avalanche of loose volcanic soil, rocks and trees that crashed down on the neighborhood from the surrounding Cordillera del Bálsamo hills. Photo by Dana Martin—IDB.
