he H. Sophie Newcomb Memorial College, the women's division of Tulane University, was founded in 1886 to provide opportunities for women with artistic inclinations. Ellsworth Woodward (1861-1939) was responsible for the artistic and commercial enterprise. Over a 45-year period, 70,000 pieces were produced at the college and sold all over the United States. Between 1900 and 1915, examples of Newcomb pottery received eight international awards at world expositions. This beautiful pottery is symmetrical, rational, and inclined to the functional; its decoration is organic and inspired by nature; and its color ranges usually in neutral, blue, and greenish tones. Newcomb is the best known of all Southern pottery.
